Rockstar's GTA VI Preview Dwarfed Netflix's Own Films by 8 Million Views, After Briefly Taking the Platform Offline

GTA VI: Extended Look Shatters Netflix Records, Triggering Platform-Wide Outages

It comes as no surprise to anyone familiar with the colossal scale of Rockstar Games’ upcoming title that the recent broadcast, GTA VI: An Extended Look, has dominated global streaming charts. The special presentation, which premiered exclusively on Netflix for a six-hour window last week, has officially been crowned the most-watched title on the platform for the week.

A Streaming Juggernaut

According to Netflix’s official performance metrics, the broadcast pulled in a staggering 31.1 million views over a four-day period, spanning from its Thursday, August 27 debut through Sunday, August 30.

The numbers demonstrate a clear victory for the partnership between Rockstar and Netflix. The special landed at the number one spot on the English-language film list in 87 out of the 93 countries tracked by the streamer. It outperformed its closest competitor, The Whisper Man, by a margin of nearly eight million views. Furthermore, it easily eclipsed the platform’s leading television titles, such as Death of the Pastor’s Wife and Beauty in Black, proving that the anticipation for Rockstar’s latest open-world epic transcends traditional streaming demographics.

Outside of the Netflix ecosystem, the trailer continues to rack up massive engagement, with over 18 million views on Rockstar’s official YouTube channel, not accounting for the countless fan-made reactions and reuploads currently flooding the internet.

The Cost of Unprecedented Demand

The massive influx of traffic caused significant technical friction for Netflix. As the broadcast went live on the night of August 27, users reported that the streaming app began to crash almost immediately.

Data provided by Sensor Tower offers a clear picture of the digital strain. During the premiere, Netflix’s US mobile viewership spiked by 35% hour-over-hour, with mobile app activity surging 50% compared to the average of the previous 12 Thursdays. Even more extreme was the web traffic, which rose 125% above its typical average, ultimately forcing the platform into instability. The ripple effect was felt elsewhere as well; creators streaming live reactions on Twitch reported their own platform outages shortly after the preview dropped.

Abe Yousef, Senior Insights Analyst at Sensor Tower, highlighted the strategic brilliance behind this collaboration: “Utilizing lexicon-stirring events tied to notable IP has helped expand Netflix’s appeal as an all-encompassing entertainment platform. By aligning itself with the launch of a highly anticipated console title, Netflix is converting heightened consumer interest into re-engagement from lapsed viewers and sign-ups from non-subscribers.”

A Shift in Marketing

Brandon Riegg, Netflix’s VP of Nonfiction Series, noted that the partnership reflects the evolving nature of the platform. “Grand Theft Auto reveals have become cultural moments in their own right,” Riegg stated. “It’s a reflection of what we hope Netflix is becoming: a place where the most ambitious storytelling, from any medium, can find the biggest possible audience.”

For fans eager to get their hands on the game itself, the wait is nearing its end. Grand Theft Auto VI is set to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X. With Rockstar recently beginning to open up about map scale and gameplay mechanics, the gaming community remains in a fever pitch as the release date approaches.
