Rupee Strengthens to 95.64 Against Dollar Amid Cautious Market Sentiment
The Indian Rupee opened the week on a positive note, gaining 7 paise to trade at 95.64 against the US dollar in early interbank foreign exchange trading. While the domestic currency attempted to sustain its momentum, gains were strictly capped by lingering geopolitical tensions, fluctuating crude oil prices, and persistent dollar demand from importers.
A Range-Bound Start
The currency opened at 95.68 at the interbank forex market before inching up to 95.64. This follows a modest recovery seen on Friday, when the rupee closed at 95.71, marking a 3-paise gain over the previous session.
Market experts attribute the morning’s modest strength to a softer Dollar Index; however, this tailwind was largely neutralized by the competing pressure of elevated Brent crude costs. The dollar index, which measures the greenback’s strength against a basket of six major currencies, was up 0.03% at 98.82 during the session.
Geopolitical Jitters and Iran Sanctions
Investor sentiment remains anchored by the anticipation of fresh sanctions from Washington against Iran. These measures are expected to target Iran’s core economic pillars, including its oil trade, banking network, and critical shipping routes.
Amit Pabari, Managing Director of CR Forex Advisors, highlighted the underlying anxiety rippling through the markets. “The worry for markets isn’t just Iran; it’s who else gets caught in the crossfire, since several major economies continue to engage with Iranian trade in some form,” Pabari noted. He added that both oil and currency markets would likely remain in “wait-and-see” mode until official details regarding the sanctions are released.
Broader Economic Indicators
Despite the caution in the currency markets, Indian equities started the week in the green. The BSE Sensex climbed 202.42 points to reach 77,744.15, while the NSE Nifty saw a gain of 55.35 points to trade at 24,309.
However, pressure from foreign institutional investors persists. Exchange data from Friday indicated that FIIs remained net sellers, offloading equities worth Rs 542.71 crore.
On the macroeconomic front, India’s financial position remains robust. The Reserve Bank of India reported on Friday that the nation’s foreign exchange reserves saw a significant surge, rising by $9.905 billion to reach a record $716.907 billion for the week ended August 14.
As the week progresses, traders will be closely monitoring global oil benchmarks—with Brent crude currently trading 1.32% lower at $93.14 per barrel—and official announcements from Washington, which are expected to dictate the immediate trajectory of the rupee.
