Kendal Snowsports club had a record-breaking Primary School Raceday this year with 33 teams and 132 competitors taking part in the event.
An amazing 15 schools took part in the annual ski race at the club on April 23, in an afternoon filled with head-to-head relay races, with skiers as young as six taking part.
The organiser of the event, and a KSC volunteer, Tracy Oncal said: “All the children were very supportive of each other and showed fantastic comradery. Many friends and family came along to support and cheer the teams on.
It was a fabulous event made better by the glorious sunshine. All the children had a brilliant experience.”
She added: “It is a fun event for all children giving everyone opportunity to race with their school friends.”
This is the 12th year of the competition, and it continues to be enjoyed by many local schools.
The winners were:
Year 4 and under: 1st St Thomas’s CE Primary School, 2nd Ghyllside Asteroids (Ghyllside Primary School), 3rd Grayrigg CE School
Year 5 and 6 winners: 1st Flying Herons (Heron Hill Primary School), 2nd Grayrigg Gliders (Grayrigg CE School), 3rd Ghyllside Rockets (Ghyllside Primary School)
Laura Eastham is the mum of two of Heron Hill’s winning team members – she spoke to The Westmorland Gazette about the event.
She said: “The races are such a fun afternoon for all the children, and it was fantastic to see such an amazing turnout from youngsters of all abilities. Heron Hill Primary has now won gold for two consecutive years which is a wonderful achievement.”
Laura also praised the club for the many opportunities it has given her children over the years.
This is the penultimate event in the KSC year before the summer break, with freestyle competition KJAM closing the season May 9.
