Seagull Theatre Brings Arun Sarma’s Classic Sri Nibaran Bhattacharya to Hindi Stage for the First Time
Guwahati, May 2025: Seagull Theatre, one of Guwahati’s most respected theatre groups, drew packed houses on 28 and 29 May with its landmark production of acclaimed Assamese playwright Arun Sarma’s Sri Nibaran Bhattacharya — staged in Hindi for the very first time.
Founded in 1990, Seagull Theatre has long been committed to the art of performance. With this production, the group takes a significant step towards bringing Assamese theatrical heritage to a pan-Indian audience. The play was directed by Baharul Islam, who also envisioned its Hindi adaptation.
Arun Sarma, celebrated as one of the foremost voices in modern Assamese literature and theatre, was known for his unconventional narrative style and incisive observations on society. Over his distinguished career, he authored numerous plays and novels that captured the quiet struggles and contradictions of everyday life. His contributions earned him the Sahitya Akademi Award, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, and the Padma Shri in 2010.
Sri Nibaran Bhattacharya remains among his most poignant works — a deeply introspective portrayal of an artist’s longing to be acknowledged and understood. Exploring themes of passion, alienation, and creative resilience, the play speaks to the timeless human need to give voice to one’s deepest convictions.
The Hindi translation was prepared by Asha Kothari Choudhury. Music was composed by Prashanta Kalita, with set design by Rakibul Ahmed and Gouranga Narayan Dev. Costumes and lighting were handled by Bhagirathi Bai, with assistance from Kanu Choudhury.
The production featured a talented ensemble cast including Baharul Islam, Raju Roy, Jit Baruah, Zia Bahar, Gouranga Narayan Dev, Rakibul Hussain, Amlan, Prashanta Das, Arbab Omar, Poppy, Manasi, Gunjan, and Hawa. The performances were held at the Seagull Studio on Juroni Path, R.G. Baruah Road, Guwahati.
Following its successful debut, the production is planned to tour several cities across the country.
