ADELAIDE — A South Australian District Court trial has commenced for former ABC camera operator Trevor James Scroop, 65, who faces more than 40 charges of sexual abuse against dozens of young boys.
Prosecutors allege that Mr. Scroop exploited his professional status and personal ties to First Nations communities to gain access to 30 known alleged victims, aged between five and 16 at the time of the offending. The abuse is alleged to have occurred between the late 1980s and 2023.
In his opening address, prosecutor Paul Tate detailed how the defendant allegedly leveraged his marriage to a First Nations woman and his status as an “initiated man” within a specific community to earn the trust of parents in the Northern Territory. This trust allowed him to take children on trips to Adelaide, where he would allegedly abuse them while they were under his care.
The court heard that the abuse was often facilitated by Mr. Scroop’s professional life. One alleged victim, who met the defendant at Football Park while Mr. Scroop was filming an SANFL match, was just eight years old at the time. Mr. Tate explained that the boy initially took an interest in the camera equipment, but the relationship quickly turned predatory.
“He thought the accused seemed nice, he’d purchase soft drinks and food when they spent time together; however, that progressed to sexual touching in the toilets at the football and then to visits at the accused’s house,” Mr. Tate told the court.
The prosecution further alleged that Mr. Scroop used gifts and financial influence to silence his victims and maintain his control. In one instance, when a victim threatened to report him to the police, the defendant allegedly bought the boy a motorbike and a Holden Torana SLR 5000 to ensure his silence. The victim reportedly referred to the defendant as “Uncle Trevor” as he was taken on trips to beaches and arcades.
Mr. Scroop was employed as a camera operator at the ABC from the early 1980s through to the early 2000s, and the court heard that he even brought one alleged victim to the broadcaster’s Collinswood office during a stay.
Mr. Tate emphasized the vulnerability of the victims, noting that they were often in the sole care of the defendant during these interactions. “They were boys who were at times in his care, boys who were at times with him when he was the only adult looking after him,” the prosecutor said.
Trevor James Scroop has pleaded not guilty to all charges. The trial, presided over by Judge Ian White, is expected to continue into next year.
