Puneet Vashisht Alleges His Scenes Were Cut from ‘Josh’ Because He Outshone Shah Rukh Khan
In a candid and reflective interview, actor Puneet Vashisht has shed light on the turbulent experience of filming the 2000 cult classic Josh. Vashisht, who played the character of Ronnie in the Mansoor Khan directorial, claims that his screen time was significantly reduced because his energy on set unintentionally drew attention away from the film’s lead, Shah Rukh Khan.
The Dynamics of ‘Josh’
Vashisht, who had previously trained Shah Rukh Khan in dance, noted that the camaraderie between them was complicated by the competitive nature of film production during that era. According to Vashisht, the director and lead actor often found his presence to be an unintended distraction.
"I had trained Shah Rukh bhai in dance, and he was aware of my energy," Vashisht shared during his appearance on the show Dil Se Dil Ki Baatein. "When we were setting up shots, if he would do a 10-foot jump, I would automatically jump 14 feet. The focus would shift to me, and as a result, I was cut out. If I were in his place, maybe I would have done the same—the strategy was to eliminate anything that came in the way of his rise."
Vashisht admitted that at the time—being only 20 years old—he lacked the maturity to handle the frustration of the four-and-a-half-year production cycle, focusing more on the "lost" scenes rather than the success of the film itself.
Reflections on Shah Rukh Khan and Nepotism
When asked about his professional opinion of the superstar, Vashisht offered a nuanced take. "I wouldn’t call him a ‘great actor,’ but I would call him a creative, energetic superstar. He is an entertaining man," he remarked.
The actor also touched upon the industry’s evolution regarding nepotism. While he acknowledged that the phenomenon existed during his early days, he noted that it has become significantly more institutionalized today. "The seeds of nepotism were being sown back then, but it wasn’t as dominant as it is now with the likes of Ananya Panday, Varun Dhawan, and Tiger Shroff," he added.
Overcoming Personal Struggles
The aftermath of Josh was a challenging period for Vashisht. He attributes his subsequent professional sidelining to industry "lobbies" that were uncomfortable with his raw energy. This led him into a dark phase marked by depression and alcoholism.
"I had the talent and the confidence, but it wasn’t being utilized. Those groups and lobbies avoided me, and I slipped into a bad place," Vashisht confessed. However, he maintains that he has since found peace, viewing those struggles as a necessary part of his life’s journey.
Puneet Vashisht’s filmography includes notable appearances in Taal (1999), Gayab (2004), Fanaa (2006), and Happy New Year (2014). Beyond cinema, he is also remembered by television audiences for his stint as a wild card contestant on the reality show Bigg Boss 9 in 2015.
