Shehzad Poonawalla 'presses' BJP to accept resignation after first letter rejected

Shehzad Poonawalla, a prominent leader within the Bharatiya Janata Party, has reiterated his request for the party to officially accept his resignation from all party posts. This comes after his initial resignation offer on July 30 was reportedly declined by the party. In a letter released on Monday, Poonawalla conveyed his appreciation for the party’s initial refusal to accept his resignation, acknowledging their request for him to reconsider. However, after extensive introspection, he has reached a firm decision and is now pressing to be relieved of his responsibilities as National Spokesperson and his active primary membership of the BJP.

In his correspondence, Poonawalla also articulated profound gratitude and respect for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, party president Nitin Nabin, and senior leaders including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and B. L. Santosh.

The motivation behind Poonawalla’s departure stems from a combination of personal and financial challenges, necessitating his transition into the private sector. He also alluded to internal friction, stating, “The events of the last few days, courtesy certain individuals about whom I have told you in great detail, have forced me to reinforce and stand by my earlier decision.” This suggests underlying tensions with specific party members that have solidified his resolve to leave.

Earlier in July, a clear indication of his impending departure emerged when Poonawalla modified his X (formerly Twitter) biography, notably omitting any mention of the BJP. His updated bio currently reflects his identity as: “Religion, Islam, Culture, Hindu, ideology-Bhartiya, Author: GST ki Yatra; Lifelong follower of PM Narendra Modi.”

Poonawalla’s journey with the BJP began after he exited the Congress party in 2017, a move triggered by disagreements over the Congress’s presidential election process. Following his integration into the BJP, he ascended to the influential position of national spokesperson. Throughout his tenure, he has been a steadfast advocate and staunch supporter of PM Modi, consistently critiquing the Congress party and its prominent figures, including Member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi. This latest development adds another layer to the complex political landscape of India news.
