"Should Not Speak Whatever They Think": Ally Vaiko On TVK's 'Vijay For PM' Push

Political Tensions Rise: Congress Issues Ultimatum Over “Vijay for PM” Campaign in Tamil Nadu

Chennai: The political landscape in Tamil Nadu is witnessing a period of mounting volatility as a growing chorus within the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) pushing for Chief Minister Vijay as a potential Prime Ministerial candidate has sent shockwaves through the ruling coalition. The move has drawn a sharp, public rebuke from key allies, most notably the Congress party.

In a direct ultimatum issued to his coalition partners, Congress Tourism Minister Rajeshkumar has signaled that the party’s continued participation in the Vijay-led cabinet is contingent upon the alliance’s unwavering support for Rahul Gandhi as the Prime Ministerial candidate for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

“I am clear. In 2029, our leader Rahul Gandhi will become the next Prime Minister,” Rajeshkumar stated. “If by any chance TVK doesn’t agree, the two ministers of Congress will not continue in our positions.”

A Friction-Filled Alliance

The tension stems from increasingly vocal calls from senior TVK leaders, including Aadhav Arjuna and Sarathkumar, who have publicly advocated for Vijay to be projected as a candidate for the nation’s top office. This momentum has been further amplified by the appearance of “Vijay for PM” posters in Tuticorin, signaling a ground-level push that has left coalition partners uneasy.

While Congress leaders initially dismissed these calls as the product of a “fan club mindset”—a sentiment echoed previously by MP Karti Chidambaram—the rhetoric from Rajeshkumar marks a significant escalation in the standoff.

The instability is compounded by the mathematical reality of the Tamil Nadu Assembly. With 107 MLAs, the TVK is 11 seats short of the 118 required for a simple majority. The government’s survival rests on a coalition that includes five Congress MLAs, two VCK MLAs, two IUML members, and external support from CPI and CPM. Any rupture within this delicate structure could jeopardize the current administration.

Calls for Restraint

The pushback has extended to veteran politician and MDMK chief Vaiko, who urged the Chief Minister to maintain discipline within his ranks. Vaiko emphasized that as the head of the INDIA bloc, the Congress party is the only entity with the mandate to field a Prime Ministerial candidate.

“Congress heads the INDIA bloc at the national level. So only Rahul Gandhi can be fielded as Prime Ministerial candidate. There is no possibility for any other alternative,” Vaiko said. He further advised the Chief Minister to rein in his ministers, noting that public contradictions within an alliance are counterproductive and politically dangerous.

The Great Unknown

Despite the rising clamor, Chief Minister Vijay has maintained a strategic silence, leaving his political rivals and allies alike guessing about his true intentions. It remains unclear whether the “Vijay for PM” movement is a calculated trial balloon designed to test national waters, a localized campaign intended to boost his image within Tamil Nadu, or a serious long-term bid for national leadership.

As the TVK remains tight-lipped—with spokespersons declining to comment on the matter—the alliance remains in a state of suspended animation, waiting to see if the Chief Minister will pivot toward national ambitions or move to pacify his restless partners.
