'Shubman Gill didn't back him': India captain questioned after Kuldeep Yadav bowled just 25 overs in Galle | Cricket News

"He Needs Backing": Mohammed Kaif Questions Shubman Gill’s Handling of Kuldeep Yadav

Former Indian cricketer Mohammed Kaif has voiced strong concerns regarding the team management’s usage of Kuldeep Yadav during the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. Despite India securing a dominant 165-run victory, Kaif believes the treatment of the wrist-spinner points to a concerning lack of faith from skipper Shubman Gill.

The Numbers Behind the Criticism

The discrepancy in workload during the Test was stark. While Ravindra Jadeja and Manav Suthar bowled approximately 44 overs each—collecting 14 wickets between them—Kuldeep was handed only 25 overs across both innings, resulting in just one wicket.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif emphasized that Kuldeep is a "unique gift" to Indian cricket who requires consistent support to flourish. "From how he was used, it is clear that Shubman Gill doesn’t have enough faith in Kuldeep Yadav," Kaif remarked. "You don’t get a bowler like Kuldeep very often. While we may find replacements for players like Jadeja or Ashwin, Kuldeep’s skill set is a rarity in cricket history."

The Importance of Rhythm for Wrist-Spinners

Kaif, a seasoned observer of the game, highlighted the technical requirements of wrist-spin, noting that the nature of the craft demands patience and long spells.

"When you give a bowler a spell, especially a wrist-spinner, you need to give him a long spell," Kaif explained. "Short bursts do not help; they don’t allow a bowler to find their rhythm or rectify mistakes in real-time. By not giving him a longer run, Gill did not back him in that sense."

Echoing the sentiments of former head coach Ravi Shastri, Kaif labeled Kuldeep as India’s premier overseas spinner. He argued that on flatter pitches where the surface provides minimal assistance, Kuldeep’s ability to extract turn and deception becomes an invaluable asset for the team.

Strategic Changes Ahead for Colombo?

Looking toward the second Test in Colombo, which begins on August 23, Kaif suggested that the team might be contemplating a tactical shift. Pointing to the success of Sri Lankan left-handers Niroshan Dickwella and Sonal Dinusha in the first Test, Kaif noted that the captain seemed to miss having an off-spinner in the attack.

"I feel India might be considering playing Saransh Jain in Colombo," Kaif said. "Because of the success of Sri Lanka’s in-form lefties, it became clear that Gill was searching for an off-spinner. It has shifted the dynamic from a contest between Suthar and Saransh to a decision between Kuldeep and Saransh."

A Proven Track Record

Since his Test debut in 2018, Kuldeep has proven his mettle, claiming 80 wickets in 19 Tests at an impressive average of 23.36, including five five-wicket hauls. While he has struggled to find his rhythm in his two appearances this year—averaging over 41—critics like Kaif argue that his recent performance is a byproduct of inconsistent usage rather than a decline in talent.

As India looks to seal the series in Colombo, the spotlight remains firmly on how the team management balances the need for specialized spin against the tactical requirements of a changing pitch.
