BCCI to Conduct High-Level Review Meeting Following Team India’s Recent Overseas Struggles
MUMBAI – The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to convene a critical review meeting at its Mumbai headquarters this Thursday. The session aims to address the national team’s recent underwhelming performances across multiple international tours and establish a definitive roadmap for the future.
The high-stakes meeting will see key leadership figures in attendance, including head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and the head of the Centre of Excellence (CoE), VVS Laxman. Joining them will be BCCI President Mithun Manhas and Secretary Devajit Saikia. Sources have also indicated that white-ball captain Shubman Gill and T20 captain Shreyas Iyer may participate in the deliberations.
A Summer of Disappointment
The review was originally intended to take place immediately following India’s challenging tours of Ireland and England; however, the schedule was delayed to accommodate the team’s recent two-Test tour of Sri Lanka.
The scope of the meeting has been expanded to cover a broader period of struggle. India’s recent run of form has been poor:
- Ireland: A 2-0 loss in the T20I series back in June.
- England: A lopsided 4-0 defeat in the five-match T20I series, headlined by a crushing 125-run loss at Nottingham. India also conceded the ODI series 2-1 under Gill’s leadership.
- Ongoing Concerns: Officials confirmed that the recent tours of Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka will also undergo a rigorous assessment.
Addressing the Injury Crisis
Beyond tactical failures, the BCCI is deeply concerned with the team’s ongoing struggle with physical conditioning. The board intends to use the meeting to overhaul player injury management protocols, particularly with a pivotal two-Test series against New Zealand looming in November.
Frequent injuries have plagued the squad throughout the recent overseas campaigns. Shubman Gill himself voiced frustration following the third ODI at Lord’s, noting that constant roster changes due to fitness issues have severely hampered the team’s ability to settle into a rhythm.
The crisis is currently at a head, as four key players—Jasprit Bumrah, Washington Sundar, Nitish Reddy, and Harshit Rana—face uncertain availability for the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan. The quartet is scheduled to undergo mandatory fitness evaluations at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru on September 9.
As the BCCI looks to steady the ship, stakeholders will be watching closely to see what structural changes, if any, are implemented to address the team’s performance dip and recurring injury woes.
