Spotify Unveils "Playlist Notes" Feature, Deepening Personalization and Social Connection
STOCKHOLM, Sweden – August 17, 2026 – Spotify, the global audio streaming giant, today announced the launch of "Playlist Notes," a new feature designed to enrich the user experience by allowing listeners to add personal context and commentary to their curated playlists. This innovation builds upon the recently introduced "User Notes," which enabled individual track annotations, further cementing Spotify’s commitment to fostering a more social and personalized audio journey.
"Playlist Notes" empowers users to imbue their playlists with deeper meaning. Whether a song evokes a cherished memory, resonates with a specific person, or is simply a track they believe everyone should hear, users can now articulate these sentiments directly within the playlist interface. This functionality extends beyond music to include podcast episodes and audiobooks, offering a comprehensive contextual layer across all audio formats.
The process for adding notes is straightforward and accessible via the mobile app. Users can open any playlist they own or collaborate on, tap the three dots next to a specific track, podcast episode, or audiobook, select "add note," and then save their thoughts. Once saved, these notes become visible to anyone who has access to view the playlist, fostering a shared understanding and appreciation of the curated content.
Beyond user-generated content, Spotify is also integrating this innovative concept into its vast catalog of editorial playlists. Spotify’s editors will now be able to add notes explaining the rationale behind their song selections, offering listeners a unique glimpse into the expert curation process. Initially, this feature will be rolled out on some of Spotify’s most popular playlists, including "Today’s Top Hits," "RapCaviar," "Hot Country," "All New Pop," and "Fresh Finds Hip-Hop," providing a richer, more informative experience for millions of listeners.
In conjunction with editorial notes, Spotify is also introducing new "Editor Profiles." These profiles will offer a dedicated space for listeners to explore an editor’s top tracks and albums, along with a comprehensive list of the playlists they manage. This initiative aims to humanize the curation process, providing greater insight into the tastes and expertise of the individuals shaping Spotify’s influential recommendations.
The rollout of user-created "Playlist Notes" is extensive, reaching iOS and Android devices across more than 100 markets globally. Editor notes and profiles, however, will initially be available to free and premium users aged 16 and older in key markets, including the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.
While seemingly a minor addition, "Playlist Notes" represents a strategic move within Spotify’s broader vision to cultivate a more social and deeply personal application experience. By providing users with a platform to articulate the stories and motivations behind their musical preferences, Spotify aims to foster a stronger sense of community and shared discovery.
This latest feature also serves to further differentiate Spotify from its key competitors, such as Apple Music and YouTube Music. The company recently announced impressive Q2 earnings, revealing a significant milestone of surpassing 300 million subscribers for the first time. Additionally, Spotify reported a robust 777 million monthly active users, underscoring its dominant position in the audio streaming landscape. "Playlist Notes" is poised to enhance user engagement and retention, reinforcing Spotify’s commitment to innovation and its dedication to providing an unparalleled audio experience.
