Sunny Deol Reflects on Post-Blockbuster Slump and Rs 55 Crore Debt, Crediting Perseverance for Comeback

Mumbai, India – Following the monumental success of ‘Gadar 2’ in 2023, veteran actor Sunny Deol has candidly opened up about the arduous journey he faced in the years prior, marked by a struggle to secure meaningful film roles despite delivering colossal hits like ‘Gadar’ and ‘Indian’ in 2001. Deol also revealed the significant financial tribulations that arose from his forays into film direction and production, even as he maintained an unwavering sense of contentment throughout.

A 2001 Triumvirate: Gadar, Indian, and Lagaan

Speaking on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast, Deol cast his mind back to 2001, a pivotal year in Indian cinema. ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’ emerged as a box-office behemoth, coinciding with the release of Aamir Khan’s critically acclaimed ‘Lagaan’. Deol proudly recollected ‘Gadar’s staggering domestic collection of approximately Rs 77 crore. He further asserted that his subsequent release that year, ‘Indian’, outshone ‘Lagaan’ at the box office. "Along with Gadar, I also delivered Indian, which was a much bigger hit than Lagaan and all the other films of that time. It did two to three times of ‘Lagaan’s business. ‘Gadar’ did much more than that," Deol stated, emphasizing the remarkable commercial performance of his films.

The Shifting Sands of Bollywood and a Career Slowdown

Despite these back-to-back blockbusters, Deol lamented the lack of sustained momentum. He observed a significant shift in the industry landscape. "Suddenly, corporates came in, and the film industry’s format began changing," he explained. This evolving environment, coupled with an inexplicable drought of suitable scripts and collaborators, led to a gradual slowdown in his career. "But after that, I don’t know why I wasn’t getting the right subjects and makers," he admitted.

Navigating a Rs 55 Crore Debt with Undeterred Spirit

Deol’s ventures into film production and direction, while driven by creative ambition, inadvertently contributed to his financial strain. He recounted that these experimental projects added substantially to his debt, yet he remained remarkably sanguine. "I can’t do so many things for money. But to be very honest, I’m very happy. Even when I was in debt, I was very happy. I was living my life," he affirmed, showcasing an admirable resilience.

The extent of this financial burden came to public light in 2023, shortly after ‘Gadar 2’s triumphant return. A bank issued an e-auction notice for his Juhu property, Sunny Villa, citing outstanding dues amounting to a significant Rs 55.99 crore. However, the notice was subsequently withdrawn after Deol successfully settled the amount. Reflecting on this challenging period, Deol clarified, "The money I owed was all mine. I didn’t borrow it from anyone. I didn’t owe anyone anything. I just had to sell my own asset and pay back."

Directional Endeavors and Their Financial Fallout

The roots of this substantial debt can be traced back to Deol’s 2016 film, ‘Ghayal Returns’, a project he not only starred in but also produced and directed. His directorial journey had previously included ‘Dillagi’ (1999) and ‘Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas’ (2019), neither of which achieved commercial success. Deol expressed bewilderment at ‘Dillagi’s box office failure, stating, "I don’t know why it didn’t work. So many people come up to me and say they loved ‘Dillagi’, but I can’t help it. I did what I wanted to and gave my best."

Aamir Khan’s Support and a Renewed Partnership

The narrative took a positive turn with the phenomenal success of ‘Gadar 2’, which resurrected Deol’s career and paved the way for new projects like ‘Jaat’ and ‘Border 2’. This resurgence also rekindled his collaboration with acclaimed director Rajkumar Santoshi, known for their earlier hits including ‘Ghayal’, ‘Damini’, and ‘Ghatak’.

Interestingly, Deol revealed that Aamir Khan approached him regarding Santoshi’s upcoming film, ‘Batwara 1947’, following the ‘Gadar 2’ wave. "We were sitting on this story since 2010, but we were fortunate that Aamir wanted to do this film since he had heard it much earlier," Deol shared. While ‘Batwara 1947’ marked a reunion between Deol and Santoshi after three decades, its opening weekend domestic collection stood at approximately Rs 26.50 crore, indicating a more modest commercial reception compared to the actor’s recent blockbuster.

Sunny Deol’s journey is a testament to the unpredictable nature of the film industry, showcasing the highs of unparalleled success, the valleys of financial struggle, and the enduring power of passion and perseverance.
