Sunny Deol Reflects on Financial Woes and Unwavering Happiness Amidst Bollywood Comeback
Mumbai, India – Before the thunderous success of "Gadar 2" reignited his career, Bollywood icon Sunny Deol navigated a period of significant professional and financial hardship. In a candid interview, the actor has opened up about enduring substantial debt, even as a bank issued an e-auction notice for his Juhu property, revealing a surprisingly resilient mindset that allowed him to maintain his happiness throughout the ordeal.
Deol’s foray into film production and direction, driven by a desire to craft compelling narratives, regrettably led to considerable financial exposure. Projects like "Ghayal Returns," "Dillagi," and "Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas" failed to resonate at the box office, leaving him with mounting financial pressures.
The extent of these struggles became public in 2023, shortly after "Gadar 2" emerged as a colossal box-office triumph. A bank issued an e-auction notice for Deol’s Juhu residence, citing outstanding dues and interest amounting to a staggering Rs 55.99 crore. The notice, which garnered widespread media attention, was subsequently withdrawn after the actor committed to settling the substantial sum. The loan in question was reportedly linked to "Ghayal Returns," the 2016 action film that Deol both directed and starred in.
Now, in a revealing conversation on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast, Deol has offered a rare glimpse into his emotional state during that tumultuous period. He asserted that despite the crushing debt, he never allowed financial difficulties to diminish his joy or dictate his life choices. "I can’t do so many things for money. But to be very honest, I’m very happy. Even when I was in debt, I was very happy. I was living my life," Deol shared, underscoring his philosophical approach to life’s challenges.
He further clarified that the debt was solely a result of his own business commitments, emphasizing that he had not borrowed from individuals. "The money I owed was all mine. I didn’t borrow it from anyone. I didn’t owe anyone anything. I just had to sell my own assets and pay back," he explained, highlighting his personal accountability.
The financial strain coincided with Deol’s attempts to establish himself as a filmmaker. "Ghayal Returns" marked his second directorial venture after "Dillagi," which featured him alongside his brother Bobby Deol. Later, he directed "Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas," which served as the acting debut for his son, Karan Deol. However, none of these directorial projects achieved significant commercial success, further exacerbating his financial challenges.
Deol also reflected on the dramatic shift in his career trajectory following the immense success of his films in the early 2000s. He particularly recalled 2001, a landmark year where "Gadar" was released alongside Aamir Khan’s "Lagaan" and became a major blockbuster. He also pointed to the success of "Indian," which released later that year. "Along with Gadar, I also delivered Indian, which was a much bigger hit than Lagaan and all the other films of that time. It did two to three times of Lagaan’s business. Gadar did much more than that," Deol claimed, underscoring his box office prowess during that era.
Despite delivering major hits, Deol expressed his frustration at the subsequent struggle to find suitable subjects and collaborate with desired filmmakers. He attributed part of this change to the emergence of corporate studios and the evolving landscape of the Hindi film industry. "Suddenly, corporates came in, and the film industry’s format began changing. But after that, I don’t know why I wasn’t getting the right subjects and makers," he lamented, shedding light on the industry’s transformative period.
The actor also recalled the unforeseen difficulties surrounding his 2005 film "Jo Bole So Nihaal," which was withdrawn after facing protests and political controversy. Deol believes such incidents also played a role in shaping his career’s trajectory.
However, the unprecedented success of "Gadar 2" in 2023 marked a spectacular turnaround, propelling Deol back into the commercial limelight after years of facing an uphill battle. This cinematic resurgence has revitalized his career, demonstrating the enduring appeal of the veteran actor. Deol is currently involved in "Batwara 1947," a Partition drama that boasts a stellar cast including Preity Zinta, Ali Fazal, Shabana Azmi, and his son Karan Deol, promising another compelling performance from the seasoned star.
