Syrian court sentences Wassim al-Assad to death | Syria's War News

DAMASCUS, SYRIA – August 18, 2026 – In a landmark decision marking a pivotal moment in Syria’s transitional justice process, Wassim al-Assad, a prominent cousin of the ousted Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad, has been sentenced to death. The Fourth Criminal Court in Damascus delivered the verdict on Tuesday, convicting al-Assad of grave crimes including premeditated murder and torture committed during the nation’s nearly 14-year civil war.

Judge Fakhr al-Din al-Aryan, presiding over the case, explicitly stated that Wassim al-Assad was found guilty of multiple counts of murder, as well as "murder accompanied by torture and brutality," acts which the court unequivocally classified as "crimes against humanity and war crimes."

Footage from inside the Damascus courthouse depicted a somber Wassim al-Assad within a defendant’s cage as judges formally read out his sentence. This conviction holds immense significance, as it marks the first instance of an al-Assad family member being tried and sentenced in person within Syria for atrocities committed during the conflict.

While Bashar al-Assad and his brother Maher al-Assad also face death sentences for their roles in the conflict, their convictions were delivered in absentia, as both currently reside in exile in Russia. This distinction underscores the unprecedented nature of Wassim al-Assad’s in-person judgment.

Al Jazeera’s Obaida Hitto, reporting from outside the Damascus courthouse, emphasized the "very significant" nature of this ruling. "Today Wassim al-Assad becomes the first member of the al-Assad family… to be tried and sentenced in person here in Syria," Hitto stated, highlighting the shift in accountability for the former regime’s inner circle.

Wassim al-Assad had previously drawn international scrutiny, facing sanctions for alleged involvement in drug trafficking and for leading pro-regime paramilitary groups. The court’s proceedings revealed a detailed indictment against him, including charges of establishing and commanding irregular armed groups since early 2011. He was also accused of direct participation in military operations that targeted civilian areas in Eastern Ghouta, particularly the town of al-Mleiha, which tragically resulted in the deaths of numerous non-combatants.

However, in a partial acquittal, the court found Wassim al-Assad not guilty of the drug trafficking charges levied against him. Hitto reported that the court concluded there was insufficient evidence to establish his direct involvement in such activities.

This verdict is a crucial development in Syria’s ongoing efforts towards transitional justice. The nation’s judiciary has been actively engaged in prosecuting individuals accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity perpetrated during Bashar al-Assad’s brutal rule, aiming to bring a measure of accountability to the victims of the protracted conflict. The death sentence for Wassim al-Assad sends a powerful message about the pursuit of justice for the countless atrocities committed during the devastating war.
