Tado Challenges Google Nest with Launch of Slimmer, Matter-Enabled Smart Thermostat X
As the smart home market matures, consumer anxiety regarding “planned obsolescence” has become a significant growth driver for competitors. Tado, the European climate control specialist, is positioning itself as the reliable alternative for homeowners wary of the tech industry’s tendency to sunset legacy hardware.
In a recent interview, Christian Deilmann, co-founder and managing director of Tado, revealed that Google’s decision to shut down cloud servers for its first- and second-generation Nest thermostats resulted in “significant sales” for his company. Deilmann believes that Google’s continued support for the third-gen Nest—which maintains a strong market presence in Europe—is likely temporary. “At some point, I think they will continue their strategy,” Deilmann noted. “It doesn’t make too much sense to pull out of some generations and not others.”
A New Design Language
Capitalizing on this market shift, Tado has officially launched its Smart Thermostat X (second generation). The new model marks a departure from the company’s previous industrial aesthetic. Featuring a sleek, white square design, the device is a mere 17.8mm thick, making it significantly slimmer than its predecessors and the aging Nest units currently on the market.
The interface is intentionally minimalist; a circular display appears only when touched, allowing the device to blend into home decor rather than acting as a focal point. For those opting for the wireless version, the unit includes a rechargeable battery designed to last a full year on a single charge.
Advanced Connectivity and Performance
The Smart Thermostat X is engineered to integrate with a broad array of home heating systems, including boilers and heat pumps. Under the hood, Tado has transitioned from its proprietary 6LoWPAN technology to Matter-over-Thread, significantly improving connectivity with smart home platforms and reliable communication with receiver units placed in remote areas like basements.
Beyond hardware, Tado is expanding the utility of its ecosystem. The company is introducing the ability to manage multiple homes from a single account. Furthermore, its hydronic balancing system—which optimizes radiator heat distribution—is now TÜV-certified, a critical milestone that makes the system eligible for government heat-pump subsidies in select European markets.
The “Energy Savings” Guarantee
Tado is pairing its new hardware with a bold financial incentive: a money-back energy savings guarantee. Customers who purchase the system but feel it hasn’t delivered sufficient energy cost savings within the first 12 months are entitled to a full return, no questions asked.
To achieve these savings, Tado leans heavily on its “AI Assist” subscription service (£3.99/month or £29.99/year). The service uses algorithms to optimize heating patterns based on real-time weather data, home characteristics, and user behavior, including automated geofencing, open-window detection, and adaptive preheating.
The second-generation Smart Thermostat X is available starting today, priced at £159.99/€179.99 for the wired starter kit and £169.99/€199.99 for the wireless kit. With these aggressive updates, Tado is clearly signaling that it intends to capture the segment of the market currently looking for a more sustainable, long-term solution for home climate control.
