The End of an Era: GTA 6 Finally Ditches the Classic ‘Mash-to-Sprint’ Control Scheme

For nearly a quarter of a century, the Grand Theft Auto series has maintained one of the most polarizing and recognizable control quirks in gaming history: the requirement to repeatedly tap a face button—typically X or A—to sprint. However, as anticipation builds for the series’ next chapter, it appears Rockstar Games is finally retiring this outdated mechanic.

Following recent exclusive gameplay showcases for select media and content creators, details regarding the refined control scheme in GTA 6 have begun to emerge. Italian content creator MikeShowSha, one of the few invited to preview the title, recently addressed the change in a Q&A video. According to his report, the developer has opted to align the game with modern industry standards: clicking the left analog stick (L3) will now serve as the default input for sprinting.

Modernizing the Rockstar Formula

For over a decade, L3 has been the industry standard for sprinting across the vast majority of first- and third-person shooters. The transition is expected to make movement feel more fluid and ergonomic, eliminating the finger-fatiguing “button-mashing” that defined previous entries like GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.

In most modern titles, clicking the stick initiates a sprint, while adjusting the tilt or releasing the stick returns the character to a standard walking or jogging pace. By contrast, the classic GTA approach of tapping a face button had become a notorious relic of early 2000s game design. While some titles, such as those from FromSoftware, still utilize face buttons for movement modifiers, they typically allow players to hold the button rather than rely on the repetitive, rapid-fire tapping that long-time GTA fans have endured for years.

A New Chapter for Leonida

The shift in controls is just one of many gameplay refinements coming to the series’ expansive depiction of Leonida. While the community remains divided over reports that the game will target 30 FPS on consoles at launch—with high-frame-rate modes potentially arriving only in a post-launch update—the move to L3 sprint is being largely celebrated as a “quality of life” victory.

As Rockstar continues to polish its most ambitious open world to date, this small but significant change signals a willingness to evolve beyond the legacy mechanics that defined the series’ past. Players will be able to experience these updated controls firsthand when GTA 6 launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19th.
