Basic dignity also remains elusive. The vast majority of workers lack access to rest areas, and many are forced to pay out of their own pockets for necessities like drinking water and public restroom facilities. Compounding these issues are the harsh environmental conditions; workers reported suffering from dehydration and heat-related illness while navigating their outdoor duties.

A Call for Institutional Reform

The findings underscore a system where the convenience of the digital marketplace is subsidized by the precariousness of the workforce. As the sector continues to grow, experts are demanding a fundamental shift in how gig work is regulated in India.

The researchers behind the study have called for urgent legal recognition of gig workers to ensure their rights are enforceable. Key recommendations include mandatory safety training, greater accountability for the algorithms that dictate worker speed and behavior, and a structural requirement for platforms to provide comprehensive health and accident insurance. Without systemic changes, the report warns that the gig economy risks leaving its most essential participants behind in a cycle of instability and ill health.
