Trump Provokes Iran with "New U.S. Territory" Claim Over Vital Strait of Hormuz

Washington D.C. / Tehran – Former President Donald Trump has once again ignited controversy, this time by sharing a crudely rendered map on his Truth Social platform that declares the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz a "new U.S. territory." The provocative move comes as tensions between the United States and Iran remain acutely high, with a fragile 60-day ceasefire drawing to a close.

The graphic, featuring a large, star-spangled overlay proclaiming "NEW U.S. Territory" across the Strait of Hormuz, appeared on Trump’s social media feed, further escalating an already volatile situation. The image also labeled the Persian Gulf, Iran, and the Gulf of Oman, with the primary focus on the audacious territorial claim.

Iran was quick to retaliate, with Deputy Foreign Minister Gharibabadi issuing a sharp rebuke: "Just as Trump spelt the name of the Persian Gulf correctly, his illusion about the Strait of Hormuz will soon be corrected." This statement underscores Iran’s unwavering stance on the strait’s sovereignty and its significance to the nation.

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea, is a global chokepoint for oil shipments, with approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passing through it daily. Control over this vital shipping lane has been a consistent point of contention between the U.S. and Iran for decades.

This latest provocation arrives amidst a backdrop of heightened military threats and diplomatic stalemates. The 60-day ceasefire between the two nations is set to expire today, leaving the future of their relations uncertain. Just this weekend, the Iranian military announced a shocking bounty: $30,000 for anyone who kills or kidnaps U.S. soldiers in the region, with the reward increasing to $60,000 if the perpetrator is a woman. This announcement is particularly alarming given that there are currently no known ground deployments of U.S. soldiers in Iran, only ongoing airstrikes.

As the conflict enters its fifth month, prospects for a peaceful resolution appear increasingly dim. Trump has been vocal in his escalating rhetoric against Iran this week, even threatening to bomb another country if it were to interfere in a potential war.

In an interview with Fox News’ Trey Yingst, Trump claimed that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had established a backchannel for peace talks with his administration. He described the Iranians as "good poker players, but they’re dying," adding, "I have no time schedule. I’m not in a hurry."

The former President also weighed in on Oman, which has been involved in negotiations aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz. His comments for the nation were far less diplomatic, reportedly telling reporters, "If Oman gets in the way, we’ll bomb the s*** out of them."

The international community is now watching closely as the ceasefire deadline passes, bracing for potential further escalations in the already fraught relationship between the United States and Iran. The implications of Trump’s latest declaration, combined with the ongoing military threats and diplomatic impasses, cast a long shadow over regional stability and global energy markets.
