A tragic incident has unfolded on Salamina, a Greek island located in close proximity to Athens, where two individuals have tragically lost their lives. The deaths occurred amidst a rapid evacuation effort following the outbreak of two distinct fires that ignited within minutes of each other. The situation remains critical as nearly 200 firefighters are engaged in a relentless battle against the inferno, striving to prevent the flames from merging into a single, unmanageable blaze.
The initial fire alarm was raised at approximately 14:40 local time (12:40 GMT). Officials on the island have attributed the swift and aggressive spread of the fire to the prevailing high winds, which fanned the flames across the landscape. Salamina had, in fact, been designated under a high wildfire risk category for Sunday, indicating the volatile conditions that contributed to this devastating event.
In response to the escalating danger, a substantial maritime evacuation operation has been initiated. A spokesman for the coastguard reported to the Greek broadcaster ERT that approximately 90 individuals have already been safely evacuated from the affected areas by sea. To facilitate this crucial effort, five patrol boats have been dispatched to the region, and numerous private vessels have also been mobilised to offer assistance, highlighting the community’s collective response to the crisis.
The firefighting efforts are being bolstered by significant resources, with a number of aircraft deployed to conduct aerial drops of water and fire retardant, working in conjunction with 50 fire engines on the ground. Thodoris Zannis, the Deputy Mayor of Salamina, conveyed the gravity of the situation, explaining that firefighters are intensely focused on preventing the two separate fires from breaching a mountain on the island. Their primary objective is to stop the blazes from converging and forming a single, far more destructive wildfire, which would pose an even greater threat to life and property.
Salamina, situated just to the west of the bustling capital city of Athens, is home to an estimated 37,000 residents. A significant portion of this population comprises elderly individuals, making the evacuation and containment efforts particularly challenging and urgent. This weekend has seen similar scenes of devastation across Europe, where firefighters have been battling a multitude of wildfires, primarily exacerbated by a persistent spell of high heat and dry conditions, creating an environment highly conducive to such destructive outbreaks.
