Delhi Capitals’ Abhishek Porel Arrested on Rape Charges in Hooghly
IPL Cricketer Faces Serious Allegations Following Woman’s Complaint of Breach of Promise to Marry
Hooghly, West Bengal – Abhishek Porel, the prominent Bengal cricketer who represents the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL), was arrested on Monday night in Hooghly district. The arrest follows a formal complaint lodged by a woman who alleges Porel had sexual relations with her under the false promise of marriage. News agency PTI confirmed the development on Tuesday.
Hooghly (Rural) Superintendent of Police, Kunar Bhushan Singh, informed PTI, “There was a case lodged against him and a court order to arrest him. He was arrested late last night. He will be produced in court today.” Porel was taken into custody by Mogra police and is expected to appear before a court in Chinsurah later on Tuesday for judicial proceedings.
Police sources have revealed that a case has been registered against Porel under various sections of the newly enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including the significant Section 69, which pertains to sexual intercourse by deceitful means or by promising marriage. Additionally, provisions of the Information Technology Act have also been invoked, suggesting potential digital evidence or communication involved in the complaint.
The complaint was filed by a woman medical student from Karnataka at the Mogra police station on June 23rd. In her detailed statement, she asserted that she had been in a committed relationship with Porel for approximately three and a half years and that the couple had made concrete plans to marry. The allegations suggest a serious breach of trust and a misuse of that relationship.
Authorities initiated an investigation immediately upon receiving the complaint, leading to the subsequent arrest after due process and a court order.
