Colchester’s walking festival has returned for 2026, with a range of walks led by local residents.
It is part of the 2026 Jane’s Walk festival, with 32 walks scheduled across the Essex city.
The walks explore many themes, from the history and architecture of Colchester, to it environment.
The walks are not ‘tour-guided’, but thought of as ‘walking conversations’.
Jane’s Walk organiser Rowena Macaulay said: “The 2026 festival is dedicated to two champions of Jane’s Walks who have died in the past year – Barbara Butler, dedicated member of the Friends of Colchester Archaeological Trust and City tour guide, and artist Charles Debenham, whose many paintings of the city over the course of his long life reflected on the lesser celebrated aspects of ordinary urban life and catalogued the changes he observed. Both led Jane’s walks in the past and their observations live on for the many people who took part alongside them.
“The walks and talks organised by local people have given 1000s of people, young and old, the chance to explore our city and unique landscape through many lenses including nature, history and art. This year’s programme won’t disappoint!”
Jane’s Walk Colchester celebrates the spirit of Jane Jacobs, Canadian urbanist, writer and activist, and is supported by many much loved local institutions including Colchester Cultural & Creative Events Fund, Colchester Arts Centre, and the Commons Cafe at The Minories.
Events are running until the 10th of May
