Kroger Streamlines Operations, Shuttering Dozens of Stores Amid Strategic Realignment
Cincinnati, OH – In a significant move to enhance operational efficiency and fortify its long-term market position, Kroger, one of the nation’s largest grocery retailers, has closed at least 39 stores since last year. These closures are part of a broader strategic initiative announced in 2026, targeting 60 underperforming locations that were not “delivering sustainable results” by the end of 2026.
While Kroger has not released an exhaustive list of all affected stores or banners, an analysis of online records and local media reports confirms the closure of 39 locations across nine of its roughly 20 banners. As of January 2026, the company operated 2,697 supermarkets across 35 states, including well-known brands such as Fred Meyer, Fry’s Food and Drug, Harris Teeter, Jay C, King Soopers, Mariano’s, Pick ’n Save, QFC, and Ralphs, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing.
A spokesperson for Kroger, as reported by FOX 26 Houston, stated that these closures are aimed at helping the company “run more efficiently and ensure the long-term health of our business.” This strategic overhaul comes as Kroger simultaneously pursues aggressive growth through acquisitions, underscoring a dual strategy of consolidation and expansion.

Just last month, Kroger announced plans to acquire regional grocery chain Giant Eagle for $1.65 billion. This acquisition is poised to integrate 197 supermarkets and 11 standalone pharmacies across northern Ohio, western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, and Indiana into Kroger’s vast network, significantly strengthening its footprint in key Midwestern and Mid-Atlantic markets.
The closures are not merely outright exits in all instances. At least three of the impacted locations are slated to be replaced by larger Kroger Marketplace stores. These expansive formats transcend traditional grocery offerings, incorporating an expanded selection of non-grocery merchandise such as clothing, toys, home goods, and furniture, reflecting a broader industry trend towards hybrid retail models.
