The enduring charm of ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar,’ a film that transcended its 1992 release to become a bona fide box-office success and subsequently a cherished cult classic, belies a remarkably turbulent production history. This coming-of-age narrative, now widely lauded as a pinnacle of Indian cinema, starred Aamir Khan, Ayesha Jhulka, Pooja Bedi, and Deepak Tijori. However, its path to cinematic glory was anything but smooth, marked by significant casting upheavals and protracted delays that would test the resolve of any filmmaking team.
Initially, the visionary director Mansoor Khan had envisioned a different ensemble, with Aamir Khan slated to share the screen with Girija Shettar and renowned model-actor Milind Soman. Yet, as production unfolded, a series of pivotal casting changes reshaped the film’s final lineup, leading to the iconic version audiences cherish today.
Recalling the extensive recasting process, actress Pooja Bedi recently shed light on the behind-the-scenes drama in a candid conversation with Vickey Lalwani. She revealed that a substantial portion of the film, approximately 60%, had already been shot before she, Deepak Tijori, and Ayesha Jhulka were brought in. Bedi explained, “From what I have heard, it was about 60% shot and then me, Deepak Tijori and Ayesha Jhulka stepped in and played our happy parts and fit the characters now that Mansoor was thinking they should be portrayed in this manner and sort of resonated with the energy of what he was intending to create on cinema.” Despite the initial chaos, Bedi fondly remembered the shooting experience: “And we had so much fun shooting it. We had so much fun.” She even had a brief overlap with the original cast, noting, “I had one scene left with Milind. Milind was still there when I entered and I shot one scene with him and then he got replaced. Then Deepak Tijori stepped in.”
Deepak Tijori’s journey to ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’ was equally circuitous. He had initially auditioned for the film but was passed over despite delivering a strong performance. In a twist of fate, this period proved pivotal for his career, as acclaimed filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt promptly signed him for ‘Aashiqui’ and ‘Sadak,’ two projects that cemented his position as a rising star. Paradoxically, after a significant 75% of ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’ had been filmed with Milind Soman in the antagonist role, Tijori received an unexpected call to rejoin the project.
Tijori recounted the surprising turn of events to Bollywood Bubble: “So they had shot 75 per cent of the film with Milind. I used to hear stories that there was a problem going on on the sets of Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. But since I was not involved with the film, I didn’t pay attention. I moved on, ended Aashiqui and Sadak (1991).” His return was orchestrated by none other than Mahesh Bhatt himself, who insisted Tijori meet Mansoor Khan. Despite his initial reluctance, Tijori acquiesced. “Mahesh Bhatt asked me to go and meet Mansoor Khan. I refused. But he—you know how he would give gaalis… It’s his love and affection… So I agreed to meet Mansoor, and there I got to meet Nasir Hussain sahab,” Tijori shared, highlighting the influential figures who shaped his unexpected return.
A truly astonishing revelation emerged during the film’s 30th-anniversary celebration in 2022. Tijori disclosed a conversation with Aamir Khan and Mansoor Khan that unveiled the dire situation the production had faced. “I got to know something on the 30th anniversary of the film… Aamir and Mansoor told me that the film had shut down and Mansoor was in depression because he thought that he had wasted all his father’s money. The film was restarted after I came in,” he revealed. This poignant confession underscores the immense pressure and challenges faced by the filmmakers and highlights the crucial role the subsequent casting decisions played in salvaging and ultimately transforming ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’ into the beloved cinematic masterpiece it is today.
