Vishnu Edavan, who is currently generating buzz for his upcoming directorial venture Hi—starring Kavin and Nayanthara—recently opened up about a behind-the-scenes interaction with his former mentor, blockbuster director Lokesh Kanagaraj. The topic of conversation? The massive, uncontrollable speculation surrounding the Rajinikanth starrer, Coolie.
The Speculation That Sparked Trouble
Following the immense success of Lokesh Kanagaraj’s interconnected films like Kaithi and Vikram, fans have been obsessed with deciphering whether every subsequent project from the director would fall under the LCU banner.
During the pre-release hype for Coolie, Vishnu Edavan participated in an interview where he offhandedly suggested that the Rajinikanth starrer might indeed be part of the LCU. At the time, he admitted he thought the statement would merely add to the excitement surrounding the film.
“During the Coolie period, I gave an interview and said, ‘Maybe Coolie will be part of the LCU too. Who knows?’ After the film was released, I got badly trolled for it,” Vishnu revealed during a recent media interaction.
A Mentor’s Lesson
The remark did not go unnoticed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, who eventually pulled his former assistant aside to address the confusion. According to Vishnu, the filmmaker was far from pleased with the unnecessary fuel added to the fire of fan theories.
“Lokesh asked me, ‘You know Coolie is not part of the LCU, right? Then why on earth did you say something like that?’” Vishnu recounted.
When the young director defended himself, telling Lokesh, “No, brother, I just said it because I thought it would be fire,” the mentor’s response was swift and sobering. Lokesh reportedly looked at him and retorted, “It may be fire for you, but what about me?” before walking away.
Reflecting on the Impact
Looking back, Vishnu Edavan admits he realizes the gravity of his words. While he intended to create a buzz, he failed to account for how deeply fans invest in these cinematic theories. The pressure on a film as significant as Coolie—featuring a superstar like Rajinikanth—meant that even a speculative comment from a known industry insider could mislead audiences and invite intense scrutiny.
“Only afterwards did I think, maybe I should not have said that,” he acknowledged.
