The newspaper Shargh reported that Iman Memarian, a wildlife veterinarian and environmental activist, was arrested in Tehran on April 21. According to the report, he was detained at his workplace. The authority responsible for the arrest and the exact charges against him have not been disclosed.
Memarian, a graduate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Tehran, has spent over two decades working in wildlife conservation. Reports also indicate that he has an underlying medical condition that requires ongoing care and treatment. His detention has therefore raised serious concern among his family.
Environmental activists in Iran have faced pressure from security agencies for many years. In the current situation of internet restrictions and blackouts, such arrests are especially concerning, as access to reliable information remains limited.
