Beyond the Screen: NCERT Unveils AI Curriculum to Decode Deepfakes and Ethics for Students

NCERT Launches 20-Hour AI and Computational Thinking Module for Classes 9-12

In a strategic move to prepare the next generation for an increasingly automated world, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has unveiled a comprehensive 20-hour introductory module on computational thinking (CT) and artificial intelligence (AI). Tailored for students in classes 9 through 12, the initiative aims to transition learners from passive consumers of technology to informed, ethical, and critical users.

Developed through a collaborative effort between faculty members from IIT Madras, IIT Jodhpur, and the NCERT, the curriculum emphasizes practical understanding over rote learning. By aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the module seeks to demystify complex systems, teaching students how machines learn, how to detect deepfakes, and how to maintain ethical boundaries in the digital space.

A Curriculum Built on Critical Inquiry

Rather than focusing on technical definitions, the module is structured around five units that promote experimentation. A central component is the “Curious Notebook,” a mandatory portfolio where students document their reasoning, observations, and reflections.

“This is not a module to be memorized. It is a set of habits to be practiced,” the development team noted in the textbook’s introduction.

The units progress from identifying AI in everyday life—such as predictive text or music recommendation engines—to understanding the limitations of algorithms. Students are taught to view AI as a “helper” rather than a replacement for human thought, focusing on the “helper-stance” approach, where users refine prompts and verify AI-generated output for accuracy and potential bias.

Addressing Risks and Data Privacy

A significant portion of the course is dedicated to digital safety. With the rise of synthetic media, the module trains students to identify misinformation and hallucinations common in large language models. Furthermore, it introduces pupils to the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, 2023, urging them to scrutinize privacy policies and exercise caution regarding the input of sensitive information like Aadhaar or PAN details into AI platforms.

To ensure accessibility across diverse school infrastructures, the 20-hour program offers flexible delivery methods. Educators can opt for device-heavy laboratory sessions, teacher-led demonstrations, or “unplugged” exercises that utilize pen-and-paper discussions, making the curriculum viable for schools with limited internet connectivity.

Shaping Future-Ready Citizens

School leaders have lauded the initiative, noting that early exposure to these concepts is essential for modern education. Praneet Mungali, trustee at the Sanskriti Group of Schools, highlighted that the module serves as a cornerstone for developing logical reasoning and problem-solving skills. Similarly, Dr. Jyoti Arora, principal of Mount Abu Public School, remarked that the program is vital for nurturing global citizens who can balance technological innovation with human values.

NCERT Director Prof. Dinesh Prasad Saklani emphasized that while technology can vastly extend human capability, the ultimate responsibility for learning and moral judgment must remain with the student.

This new secondary school module follows the Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) recent rollout of a structured AI curriculum for classes 3 to 8. Together, these frameworks establish a phased, age-appropriate roadmap to ensure that students are not merely spectators to the AI revolution, but are equipped to lead it with integrity.
