Biotech Momentum Surges: Merck and Amgen Signal a Sector-Wide Breakout
The biotech sector is experiencing a significant resurgence, driven by high-profile clinical successes and robust fundamental growth. Market experts Josh Brown and Sean Russo of Ritholtz Wealth Management are pointing to two industry giants, Merck (MRK) and Amgen (AMGN), as key indicators of a broader “breakout” currently reshaping the healthcare landscape.
Merck and the Power of the ‘Breakaway Gap’
For traders and investors, the movement of a stock price often provides critical information before the fundamentals catch up. Last week, Merck (MRK) provided a textbook example of a “breakaway gap”—a technical signal where a stock jumps to a new price level on heavy volume, typically following significant company-specific news.
The catalyst for Merck’s move was a milestone in oncology: a Phase 3 trial, conducted in partnership with Moderna, showed that combining an individualized mRNA cancer vaccine with Keytruda successfully improved recurrence-free survival in melanoma patients.
“This is the first time an mRNA therapy and a checkpoint inhibitor have worked together in a Phase 3 trial for any cancer,” Brown noted.
From a technical perspective, the gap from the $137 area confirms that institutions are aggressively accumulating the stock, rather than waiting for a pullback. While the stock’s relative strength index (RSI) is currently elevated at 77, Brown suggests that traders view $145 as a key support level. If the stock maintains this price, the bullish momentum remains intact, signaling a fundamental shift in how Wall Street values Merck’s drug pipeline.
Amgen’s Methodical Climb
While Merck’s ascent was characterized by an explosive single-day move, Amgen (AMGN) represents a different, equally compelling narrative. After a quiet, methodical climb throughout the year, the stock has hit a period of accelerated growth, confirming its status as a cornerstone of the current biotech recovery.
Amgen’s rally is backed by strong performance across its diverse business segments. With six key growth drivers contributing to a 26% group increase in product sales, the company is proving that it is far more than a “one-drug” firm. Notably, the company reported significant double-digit growth in rare disease, oncology, and biosimilars, leading management to raise full-year revenue and EPS guidance.
“When the growth is consistent and management is raising guidance on top of it, new highs tend to be a signal,” said Russo.
Risk Management and Market Outlook
Despite the excitement surrounding the sector, both Brown and Russo emphasize the importance of disciplined risk management. For investors holding Amgen, the current $390–$400 zone—formerly a point of resistance—now serves as critical support. Brown advises investors to monitor the 200-day moving average, currently at $353, as a long-term floor.
As the industry continues to benefit from positive sentiment and innovative therapeutic breakthroughs, the market is signaling that the era of the “forgotten” healthcare sector may be officially over. For those looking to capitalize on this trend, the focus remains on identifying stocks where technical momentum aligns with verifiable fundamental strength.
