Uber Announces 10% Workforce Reduction in Bid to Simplify Operations

In a sweeping move to streamline its corporate structure and accelerate decision-making, Uber has announced a 10% reduction in its global workforce. The decision, disclosed in a memo to staff today, marks a significant shift for the ride-hailing and delivery giant, which has seen its top-line revenue nearly triple over the past five years.

Despite the company’s strong financial performance, Uber leadership cited the “complexity” inherent in its rapid expansion as the primary catalyst for the layoffs. According to CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, the organization had become weighed down by excessive management layers, fragmented ownership, and inefficient coordination.

A Pivot to Efficiency

The restructuring initiative is designed to transform the company into a leaner, more agile organization. “The changes we’re making today are designed to do two things: make Uber simpler and faster, and create more capacity to invest in our future,” Khosrowshahi wrote.

Key elements of the restructuring include:

  • Flattening the Hierarchy: The company is reducing management layers by broadening the scope of managers and cutting down on “micro-teams.” Notably, the number of employees situated seven or more layers from the CEO will be reduced by 20%, while the count of micro-teams is set to drop by nearly 50%.
  • Operational Consolidation: Uber is merging fragmented divisions to improve accountability. A primary example is the consolidation of its three Delivery Operations teams—Restaurants, Retail, and Direct—into unified, single-threaded teams across global and local levels.
  • A Stricter Location Strategy: Emphasizing the importance of in-person collaboration, Uber is moving to concentrate staff in specific global, regional, and tech hubs. The company is significantly scaling back its remote work policy, with leadership stating that only approximately 1% of the workforce will remain remote moving forward.

“Not a Decision Made Lightly”

While the move is intended to foster growth and innovation, the human toll is significant. Khosrowshahi emphasized that the layoffs are a result of structural prioritization rather than a reflection of individual employee performance.

“This wasn’t a decision we made lightly, because it will have a real impact on our teammates and friends who have worked hard for Uber,” the CEO noted. Affected employees have already been notified, barring local regulatory requirements in certain jurisdictions.

Preparing for the Future

The company’s leadership maintains that these cuts are necessary to free up capital for future innovations, including advancements in its core businesses and the development of autonomous technologies. By removing the friction of constant internal alignment, Uber hopes to refocus its staff on “building, shipping, and serving customers.”

As the company moves forward with this simpler and faster operating model, the focus now shifts to integrating these changes and stabilizing the organization for its next phase of growth. “With these decisions now made, our focus is on the future,” said Khosrowshahi. “The decisions we’re making today are difficult, but they will help us build an even stronger Uber for the years ahead.”
