Google Home and Gemini for Home Receive Major Update to Enhance Smart Home Control
Google is rolling out a fresh suite of updates this week for both Google Home and its Gemini-powered assistant features. The update focuses on refining voice interaction, improving hardware compatibility, and smoothing out performance bugs across both Android and iOS devices.
As part of its ongoing push to make smart home management more intuitive, Google has provided a detailed breakdown of the enhancements, which are split between the AI-focused "Gemini for Home" and the core Google Home app infrastructure.
Gemini for Home: Smarter Voice Commands
The update brings significant intelligence improvements to the Gemini voice assistant experience, specifically regarding media and home automation:
- Refined Spotify Controls: Google has improved how the assistant parses requests for music. Gemini is now better at identifying specific artist names, song titles, and playlists, ensuring that users spend less time repeating themselves.
- Precision Lighting: Users can now utilize more granular voice commands to set the mood. By asking to set lights to specific color temperatures—such as “2700 kelvins”—users can achieve precise lighting levels previously difficult to control via voice.
- Streamlined Broadcasting: The "Broadcast" feature has been simplified. Users can now initiate a broadcast with a simple command like “OK Google, broadcast message,” and the assistant will prompt them for the content of the message in a second, separate step. This removes the need to recite long, complex sentences in one breath.
Google Home App: Performance and Compatibility
For the core Google Home app, the focus is on stability, hardware accessibility, and universal data consistency.
- Expanded Lock Support: Owners of European-style smart locks now gain better control. The app can now distinguish between "unlatching" and "unlocking," and provides clear status indicators—such as “Unlocked and latched”—to provide a better view of home security at a glance.
- Consistent Temperature Units: Google has addressed long-standing confusion regarding temperature displays. The app, voice commands, and Nest hardware will now strictly adhere to the user’s preferred unit (Celsius or Fahrenheit) set within the app’s home settings.
- Android and iOS Stability: Android users should see an end to a persistent bug that forced live camera streams to stay at low 360p resolution; the app will now correctly jump to high definition. Meanwhile, iOS users benefit from improved app stability, specific fixes for thermostat rounding errors, and a new interface that keeps controls visible even when a camera is offline, making troubleshooting significantly easier.
Improved Subscription Management
Finally, Google is addressing subscription management for "Google Home Premium" users. To ensure no lapses in camera history or security monitoring, the app will now display proactive alerts if a payment method fails, allowing users to update their billing information immediately and avoid any interruption in service.
These updates are currently rolling out, and users should check their respective app stores to ensure they are running the latest version of Google Home to take advantage of these new features.
