From Farmer’s Market Hits to Brick-and-Mortar Success: Local Entrepreneurs Forge New Path

The journey from a home kitchen to a storefront is a path many dream of, but for the duo behind a pair of popular local businesses, that dream is officially becoming a reality. In a move that highlights the growing vibrancy of the local maker scene, two standout vendors from the regional farmer’s market circuit are joining forces to open a shared shop in Champaign.

A Savory Transformation

Siddity Pig Pork Snacks has become a staple for local snack enthusiasts, boasting a menu that features over 25 distinct flavors. For co-owner Harry Settles, the success is ironic; he used to despise the product.

“When you opened a bag, I couldn’t stand ’em,” Settles admitted. His perspective shifted only after he tasted fresh, artisan-made pork rinds, which he found vastly superior to their store-bought counterparts.

What began as a personal hobby turned into a side hustle after a trucking accident sidelined Settles, forcing him to work from home. The business quickly gained momentum. “My first time out at the farmer’s market, I had a nonstop line and sold out quick,” he recalled. “I was like, ‘Maybe this can really be something.’”

A Sweet Collaboration

Joining Settles in the new venture is Becky Strawbridge of Sugar Dust Creations. Her path mirrors his—what started as baking cookies, cakes, and chocolates for friends and family blossomed into a full-fledged business after she realized the high demand at local markets.

The two entrepreneurs are taking over the space at 2004 S. Neil St., formerly occupied by Hunny Bunny Bakes. By sharing a storefront, they aim to merge their respective “sweet and savory” customer bases, creating a mutually beneficial environment.

“We’re both pretty creative,” Settles said. “We’re going to try to do some merging with what I do and what she does.”

Beyond their own bottom line, the pair is committed to fostering a sense of community among other local vendors. They hope their store will serve as a resource for newcomers, helping them navigate the trial-and-error process of scaling a small business. As Settles noted, “When you start a business, you definitely don’t need to lose any more money than you’re already losing.”

For more insights into the journey of these local entrepreneurs, the new storefront is expected to open its doors to the public within the next month.
