City Council Postpones Vote on East Lubbock Concrete Plant
A contentious debate over industrial development in East Lubbock took center stage at Tuesday’s City Council meeting. Robert G. Lines, representing Hicks Oilfield, LLC, sought a special use permit to construct a 4.359-acre permanent concrete batch plant at 1501 Marshall St.
While the city’s Planning and Zoning commission had recommended approval, the project faced sharp pushback from local residents and business owners concerned about environmental and health repercussions. District 2 Councilman Gordon Harris emerged as a vocal critic of the site’s location, stating, “Stop dumping stuff in East and North Lubbock. It’s time out for them.”
Ultimately, the council voted 4-3 to postpone the final decision. The delay is intended to allow for further negotiations with Hicks Oilfield to explore potential safety guidelines and operational adjustments to appease community concerns. Goodwill Expands Career Services
The community also celebrated a boost in workforce development resources this week. Goodwill Industries of Northwest Texas officially opened its new Pathways to Success Retail Store and Career Resource Center on Thursday. Located at 510 North Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., the facility is designed to serve as a hub for job seekers, providing both retail opportunities and essential career coaching and resources.
Mellow Market Brings Nostalgia to 50th Street
On a lighter note, local entrepreneurs Ben Jordan and Hayden Meek have brought a unique retail experience to Lubbock with the opening of Mellow Market, located at 3833 50th St. #2.
The shop specializes in international snacks, difficult-to-find beverages, and wellness products. Beyond the inventory, the owners have cultivated a “homey” atmosphere where customers are encouraged to linger, listen to music, and play retro video games like Pac-Man.
“I wanted it to feel like you’re coming to hang out at somebody’s house, but they have the coolest snacks you could think of,” said Jordan. With a grand opening celebration scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 29, the market is quickly positioning itself as a must-visit destination for local snack enthusiasts.
