Nepal MP Lauds India’s ‘Heartwarming’ Support Amidst Catastrophic Glacial Disaster

KATHMANDU: As Nepal grapples with the aftermath of a devastating high-altitude glacial collapse that has left thousands missing, the nation’s leadership has extended its deep gratitude to India for its prompt and comprehensive assistance.

Last week, a massive wave of freezing water, boulders, and debris surged down the Tibet-Nepal border, triggering a humanitarian crisis. In the wake of the disaster, Nepal MP Vidushi Rana reached out to express her appreciation for India’s role as a vital partner in the ongoing rescue and relief operations.

India’s Swift Response

In an interview, Rana highlighted that India, acting as Nepal’s closest neighbour, has provided indispensable support. “We have got support from India, our closest neighbour, and they helped us with tonnes of material, relief operations, sent drones and technical support,” she stated.

The aid comes at a critical juncture as the Himalayan nation faces the severe realities of climate change. Rana underscored the irony of the situation, noting that while Nepal contributes minimally to global carbon emissions, it remains disproportionately vulnerable to the consequences of a warming planet.

Ground Zero: The Scale of the Crisis

The situation remains dire, with emergency teams confirming the recovery of over 1,100 bodies. Approximately 4,500 people remain missing, and authorities are working around the clock to locate survivors.

More than 9,200 troops have been deployed to the disaster-stricken regions, utilizing helicopters, heavy machinery, and excavators to clear debris-choked roads. A primary focus for rescue teams has been the wreckage of hydroelectric projects. Several powerhouses and tunnels are believed to be holding survivors; currently, rescuers are battling floodwaters and unstable structures to reach 639 individuals believed to be trapped within the ruins. So far, 279 people have been safely extracted from these sites.

Leadership and Accountability

The disaster is being monitored at the highest levels, with Prime Minister Balen Shah personally overseeing the rescue efforts. Rana noted that the Prime Minister has been visiting disaster sites and holding constant briefings with ministers and security officials to ensure that “no stone is left unturned” in the search for survivors.

Recognizing the long road to recovery, the Nepalese government has launched a diplomatic push for international financial assistance. Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal has framed the request not as a plea for charity, but as a matter of “moral liability” for the global community.

As search operations continue in the treacherous mountain terrain, the solidarity shown by international partners like India remains a beacon of hope for the thousands of families still waiting for word on their loved ones.
