Rory McIlroy Backs Major Revamp as PGA Tour Introduces Matchplay to Season Finale

In a seismic shift for professional golf, the PGA Tour has announced a major restructuring of its season-ending playoffs, a move that has earned the full endorsement of four-time major champion Rory McIlroy.

PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp confirmed on Thursday that beginning in 2028, the Tour Championship will undergo a radical transformation. Moving away from the traditional stroke-play format, the finale will be expanded to a two-week event held across two different venues, adopting an exciting head-to-head matchplay structure.

For McIlroy, the three-time FedEx Cup champion, the decision represents a long-awaited victory for the sport’s fanbase. The Northern Irishman believes the move signifies that the Tour’s leadership is finally prioritizing viewer engagement after years of criticism regarding the entertainment value of the current playoff system.

“I think the PGA Tour, the Future Competition Committee, and everyone involved have really taken on board what the fans have been calling for, which is matchplay,” McIlroy said. “Brian took me through the plan last week for the first time. I didn’t really know anything about it, but it’s certainly different. Two weeks, two different venues—it’s cool. I think they’ve taken a big swing, and conceptually, I really like it.”

The FedEx Cup playoffs have undergone numerous iterations over the past two decades. In their current form, they consist of a three-event stroke-play series that begins with the top 70 players from the season-long points standings. While these events have been exceptionally lucrative—with the current Tour Championship at East Lake boasting a staggering $40 million purse—there has been a persistent narrative that the format lacks the drama and intensity necessary to capture casual audiences.

Reflecting on the evolution of the postseason, the 37-year-old McIlroy acknowledged that while the current setup has been “great for players” in terms of financial reward, it has arguably prioritized internal benefits over external entertainment.

“The players have been rewarded, but what the Tour is really trying to do now is listen to the fans,” McIlroy added. “This idea of matchplay over two weeks is something that came mostly from what the people who watch golf wanted, so I think that’s a really good thing.”

This transition marks the return of matchplay to the PGA Tour calendar for the first time since 2023. By moving toward a high-stakes bracket format for its crowning event, the Tour appears to be positioning itself to compete more aggressively for viewership in an increasingly crowded sports media landscape.

As golf fans digest the news, the sport looks toward a future defined by shorter, more aggressive, and arguably more volatile competitive formats, with the PGA Tour betting that head-to-head showdowns will deliver the excitement the season finale has been missing.
