Wall Street experienced a robust trading session on Thursday, pushing key benchmarks closer to attaining all-time record highs. This optimistic market sentiment was largely fueled by two significant developments: fresh economic data indicating a continued easing of inflationary pressures and a further decline in crude oil prices, which have recently been characterized by considerable volatility.
The S&P 500 demonstrated strong performance, advancing by 0.8%, positioning it favorably to surpass its previous record high established just last week. By mid-morning, the Dow Jones Industrial Average registered a gain of 185 points, equating to a 0.3% increase, while the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite showed even greater momentum, climbing by 1%.
The primary catalyst for this surge in investor confidence was the release of governmental wholesale price data. This report revealed that wholesale prices in the United States had increased by 4.7% over the past year. While still elevated, this figure represented a notable moderation from June’s 5.5% reading and also managed to undershoot economists’ pre-release expectations. This consistent deceleration in inflation provides the Federal Reserve with greater flexibility regarding its monetary policy. A sustained trend of moderating inflation could potentially create leeway for the Fed to defer further increases in interest rates. It is a well-understood economic principle that while higher borrowing costs are an effective tool for reining in inflation, they simultaneously exert a drag on overall economic activity by elevating the cost of credit for both consumers and businesses.
The latest wholesale inflation figures, arriving merely a day after a similar report indicated softer consumer inflation, have significantly tempered expectations for an immediate rate hike. Data compiled by CME Group now suggests that traders perceive only a 35% probability of the Federal Reserve raising its benchmark interest rate during its upcoming September meeting. This represents a substantial shift from just two days prior, when the probability was estimated to be around 50%. Should the central bank opt for an interest rate hike, it would mark the first such increase in over three years. Such a move would likely attract criticism from political figures, including President Donald Trump, who has consistently advocated for lower interest rates.
The bond market promptly reflected these shifting expectations, with Treasury yields moving downward, thereby providing additional support to equity markets. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note decreased to 4.61% from its 4.68% close on Wednesday and 4.72% on Monday. Despite this decline, it remains considerably higher than the 3.97% level observed before geopolitical tensions involving Iran instigated a sharp rise in oil and gasoline prices.
Adding to the positive market sentiment, oil prices also experienced a notable decline on Thursday, further assuaging inflation concerns. Brent crude, the international benchmark, fell by 3.3% to settle at $86.02 a barrel. The oil market has been exceptionally volatile in recent weeks. Over the past month alone, Brent crude prices have fluctuated wildly, ranging from $72 to $102 a barrel. This extreme price variability has been driven by alternating waves of optimism and pessimism surrounding a potential resolution to ongoing geopolitical conflicts, which in turn influences expectations regarding the unrestricted movement of oil tankers through the Middle East and the subsequent restoration of global crude supplies.
On the stock-specific front, real estate companies emerged as some of the strongest performers on Wall Street. The prevailing environment of falling interest rates and lower bond yields typically enhances the attractiveness of dividend payouts offered by many real estate investment trusts (REITs) to investors. Furthermore, a reduction in mortgage rates is generally expected to stimulate increased activity within the housing sector. Consequently, apartment owner AvalonBay Communities saw its shares climb by 2.6%, while Builders FirstSource, a key supplier of construction materials such as countertops, advanced by 3.4%.
The decline in oil prices also provided a significant boost to companies with substantial fuel expenses, as it improved expectations for reduced operating costs. United Airlines benefited from this trend, with its stock rising by 1.7%, while cruise operator Carnival added 2.9%. In the restaurant sector, Jack in the Box reported quarterly earnings that exceeded analysts’ projections, leading to a substantial 7.3% surge in its share price. Robust corporate earnings have been a pivotal factor underpinning Wall Street’s overall rally, as stock valuations are generally correlated with companies’ long-term profit growth trajectories.
However, these widespread gains were partially offset by weakness in Cisco Systems. Despite reporting quarterly revenue and profit figures that surpassed Wall Street forecasts, Cisco’s shares declined by 7%. Analysts suggested that investors appeared to be concerned about the company’s future profit margins. Furthermore, Cisco’s stock has been under continuous pressure throughout the summer, reflecting broader market anxieties that valuations across the entire spectrum of AI-related stocks may have become excessively inflated.
Globally, equity markets presented a mixed performance across European and Asian bourses. South Korea’s Kospi index once again distinguished itself as one of the world’s top-performing indices, registering an impressive 3.6% increase. Seoul’s market has been particularly susceptible to sharp fluctuations in AI-linked stocks due to the significant influence exerted by its dominant technology giants, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.
