Political Firestorm Erupts as Penguin India Drops Sonia Gandhi’s Memoir
New Delhi: A bitter political standoff has broken out between the Congress party and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following the decision by Penguin Random House India to decline the publication of Sonia Gandhi’s upcoming memoir, Belonging: A Journey of Love.
The controversy erupted on Friday when the publisher clarified that it would not be releasing the book in India, despite its American imprint, Alfred A. Knopf, confirming an international release for November 10. The publisher stated that while it had been keen to acquire the title, it maintains a “prerogative and responsibility” to fact-check authors—a move that followed reports suggesting negotiations collapsed after the former Congress president refused to implement requested editorial changes.
Congress Alleges Political Censorship
Prominent Congress leaders were quick to condemn the move, suggesting that the publisher had buckled under pressure from the ruling establishment.
Gaurav Gogoi, the deputy leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, slammed the publisher’s explanation as “weak.” In a post on X, Gogoi remarked, “Penguin India is more than happy to publish Exam Warriors and several books on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). No doubt there are those in the BJP government who have now become afraid of a book being read by the people of India.”
Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot echoed these sentiments, questioning why the memoir could be published globally but was being blocked domestically. “Suppressing the book of Smt. Sonia Gandhi Ji… under pressure is tantamount to the murder of freedom of expression,” Gehlot stated.
BJP Rebuts “Hypocrisy”
The BJP dismissed the allegations, labeling them as a manufactured narrative designed to incite fear. C.R. Kesavan, a national spokesperson for the BJP, criticized the Congress for its “glaringly hypocritical” stance.
“The moot point in the context of Smt. Sonia Gandhi’s memoirs is: which portions of her memoir warranted fact-checking and why so?” Kesavan asked. BJP leader Ajay Alok further escalated the criticism, suggesting that the rejection was purely a matter of professional integrity. “It’s a matter of shame that even in writing a book you are not placing facts and figures. That’s why publishers are not ready to publish it. Credibility has to be maintained,” Alok said.
The Contentious Flashpoints
According to sources, the friction between the publisher and the author centered on three specific thematic areas, which have now become the focal point of the Congress vs BJP clash:
- China Border Dispute: The book reportedly details Chinese incursions into Indian territory and offers a critical perspective on the current border situation.
- Criticism of PM Modi: The manuscript allegedly includes passages questioning the Prime Minister’s leadership style and several central government policies.
- The RSS: Gandhi reportedly shares her critical views on the influence of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh on India’s social fabric and national affairs.
Sources close to the negotiations indicate that when the publisher requested revisions to these sensitive chapters, Sonia Gandhi refused, maintaining that the narrative was rooted in her personal experience and perspective, and therefore, not subject to alteration. As the debate continues, the refusal to publish has transformed what was intended to be a literary release into a significant flashpoint in India’s political discourse.
