Duleep Trophy: Shahbaz Ahmed and Sudip Gharami Power East Zone to Commanding Position

BENGALURU: East Zone resumed play on Day 2 of their Duleep Trophy quarterfinal against North East Zone from a position of absolute dominance, firmly in control after a spectacular recovery on the opening day at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Heading into the second day, East Zone sits on a formidable 355 for six, a score that seemed unlikely after a rocky start to their innings. The foundation for this resurgence was laid by Bengal’s middle-order maestro, Sudip Gharami, whose stylish 146 provided the backbone of the batting display.

A Masterclass in Recovery

Gharami, who has been in scintillating form since the previous domestic season, walked to the crease under pressure. His ability to stabilize the innings proved pivotal as he orchestrated two essential partnerships that shifted the momentum squarely in East Zone’s favor.

Early in the day, the team found themselves in a precarious spot. Gharami first steadied the ship alongside Kumar Kushagra, stitching together a vital 92-run stand for the third wicket. However, when a mini-collapse saw East Zone teetering at 138 for five, the situation demanded resilience.

The Defining Partnership

Rising to the occasion, Gharami formed a match-defining 150-run partnership with Shahbaz Ahmed for the sixth wicket. Gharami’s innings was a masterclass in controlled aggression; he faced 185 deliveries, striking 25 boundaries and a towering six. This performance marked his ninth first-class century, underscoring his growing maturity as a pivotal player for his side.

By the close of play on Day 1, Shahbaz Ahmed remained unbeaten on 100, mirroring Gharami’s intensity and ensuring that East Zone ended the day with a solid platform.

Looking Ahead

With the team already past the 350-run mark and Shahbaz still at the crease, East Zone will be looking to capitalize on their current momentum to post a mammoth first-innings total. For the North East Zone bowlers, Day 2 will be a test of patience and discipline as they attempt to break the lingering partnership and prevent the score from ballooning further.

As the match progresses, the synergy between the set batters will be key to putting the game out of reach for their opponents, as East Zone looks to cement their spot in the next round of the tournament.
