Bangladesh’s Defeat in Mackay Boosts India’s WTC Final Aspirations

NEW DELHI – The race for a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final has tightened significantly following Australia’s dominant victory over Bangladesh in the second Test in Mackay. The result has not only leveled the series at 1-1 but has provided a strategic opening for India to climb the league table.

A Critical Shift in the WTC Standings

Bangladesh, who had stunned the cricketing world by securing their first-ever Test victory on Australian soil in the Darwin opener, suffered a crushing innings-and-51-run defeat on Sunday. The loss was highlighted by a spectacular 10-wicket match haul from Australian pacer Mitchell Starc, which dismantled the visitors’ batting order.

This defeat has caused a sharp decline in Bangladesh’s points percentage (PCT), which plummeted from 66.67 to 55.56. While they currently retain the fourth position in the nine-team table with 50 points, they are now within striking distance for India.

Currently sitting in fifth place with a PCT of 53.33, India faces a clear path forward. Shubman Gill’s squad is set to face Sri Lanka in the second Test in Colombo; a victory there would mathematically propel India above Bangladesh and into fourth place, keeping them firmly in the hunt for a top-two finish.

The Broader WTC Picture

At the summit of the standings, Australia has reinforced their dominance, holding a commanding 80 PCT. They are followed by South Africa (75%) and New Zealand (72.22%) in second and third place, respectively. With the race for the top two spots—which ultimately determine the finalists—heating up, India understands that consistent performance in their remaining fixtures is non-negotiable.

Milestone for Bangladesh

Despite the disappointment of the series-leveling loss, Bangladesh has achieved a historic milestone. The team climbed three spots to reach No. 6 in the latest ICC Test rankings—the highest position in their cricket history.

Reflecting on the achievement, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto acknowledged the significance of the climb, though he remained focused on his team’s performance. "To reach No. 6 in the Test ranking is a huge achievement," Shanto said. "It would have been better if we could have played better cricket in this Test match."

Shanto also used the platform to advocate for more frequent touring, noting that his squad was playing their first Test series in Australia in 23 years. "It’s hard for the players. Probably 90% of the players haven’t played here," he explained. "If we are able to come here consistently, the players can gain the experience needed to adjust to these conditions. My request is that we want to play in these environments more often, not just once every two decades."

As the qualification battle intensifies, the World Test Championship remains the ultimate goal for these competing nations, with every series outcome playing a pivotal role in shaping the final table.
