England Remains in Grip of Drought Despite Recent Heavy Rainfall
Large parts of England remain in a state of drought despite a recent shift in weather patterns that brought heavy downpours and thunderstorm warnings across the country. The Environment Agency has confirmed that recent rainfall has done little to alleviate the long-term water scarcity caused by months of uncharacteristically hot and dry conditions.
While the nation has seen a reprieve from the summer heat, the Environment Agency reports that there has been no change to the official drought status. Approximately 71% of England’s land remains officially classified as being in a drought, with the remainder of the country—including Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire, and Yorkshire—still categorised under the “prolonged dry weather” stage.
Persistent Water Shortages
The severity of the situation is reflected in the nation’s water infrastructure. Reservoir storage levels have continued to decline, dropping by a further 2.7% this week to an average of less than 60%—a figure 18% lower than the seasonal norm. The agency warned that nine major reservoirs are now suffering from “exceptionally low” storage levels, two more than were recorded just one week ago.
Even with the recent storms, August rainfall has reached only 34% of the expected monthly average. While some rivers have seen a temporary rise in water levels due to the intense bursts of rain, officials caution that this response is likely to be “short-lived” should dry weather return. The majority of English rivers remain at “below normal” levels, with over half classified as “notably” or “exceptionally” low.
Millions Under Restrictions
The ongoing water crisis has forced water providers to implement strict usage policies. Roughly 30 million people across England are now subject to water restrictions, including hosepipe bans. Bristol Water is the latest to join this list, having enacted a temporary use ban effective August 27.
The Environment Agency noted the irony of the current weather situation, as heavy rain prompted over 40 flood alerts across the country on August 27. Officials explained that flooding is a localized and often short-lived phenomenon that can still occur even when the surrounding region is experiencing a prolonged drought.
